Itinerary

Day 1: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

Elevation: 1,500m to 2,514m (4,921ft to 8,248ft)

Hiking Time: 5-7 hours

Distance: 10 km (6 miles)

Habitat: Montane Forest

After breakfast in Arusha, you’ll be driven to Momella Gate in Arusha National Park. The trek begins with a gradual ascent through open grasslands and dense rainforest, where you may spot wildlife like giraffes, buffalo, and colobus monkeys. The trail leads to Miriakamba Hut, where you'll spend the night.

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

Elevation: 2,514m to 3,570m (8,248ft to 11,712ft)

Hiking Time: 3-5 hours

Habitat: Montane Forest and Heath Zone

Today's trek is shorter but steeper, taking you from Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut. As you ascend, the forest opens up to heathland, offering panoramic views of Mount Meru's crater and the surrounding landscape. Upon reaching Saddle Hut, you can take an optional hike to Little Meru (3,820m) for acclimatization and a spectacular sunset view.

Day 3: Saddle Hut to Summit to Miriakamba Hut

Distance: 18 km (11 miles)

Habitat: Alpine Desert, Heath Zone, and Montane Forest

Summit day begins early, around midnight, with a challenging ascent to Socialist Peak (4,566m). The trail is steep and rocky, but the effort is rewarded with breathtaking views of the sunrise over Kilimanjaro and the surrounding plains. After reaching the summit, you’ll descend back to Saddle Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Miriakamba Hut for the night.

Day 4: Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate - Arusha

On the final day, you'll descend through the forest from Miriakamba Hut back to Momella Gate. Keep an eye out for wildlife as you make your way down. At the gate, you'll be met by your driver and transferred back to Arusha, where your trek ends.
