Trekking Itineraries
The best route depends on your preferences for scenery, difficulty, and crowd levels. Popular options include the Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Rongai, and Northern Circuit routes.
The time it takes to climb Kilimanjaro depends on the chosen route. Most expeditions last between 6 to 8 days. An experienced hiker with prior acclimatization can complete an accelerated 5-day program. If you opt to stay overnight in the crater, climbs can extend to 9 days or longer.
No technical climbing skills are required. Kilimanjaro is a trekking peak, but it demands good physical fitness and acclimatization to high altitudes.
Accommodations vary by route. The Marangu route offers hut accommodations, while other routes use tents. Expect basic but adequate facilities.
Climbing Kilimanjaro is governed by the regulations of the Kilimanjaro National Park. According to official rules, all hikers must be accompanied by a local guide. Park rangers will not permit entry to anyone without a professional Kilimanjaro guide.
The best times to climb Kilimanjaro are from late December to early March and mid-June to late October. During these periods, the weather conditions are nearly ideal for trekking.
Although other months have rain, it doesn’t mean there are constant heavy showers. Typically, rains begin in the latter half of the day. This allows trekkers a significant window of clear weather every day during the rainy season. There are also days without any rain.
While wildlife sightings are not the main attraction, you might see various birds, monkeys, and smaller mammals in the lower forested zones.
Climbing Kilimanjaro is generally safe when done with a reputable tour operator. The main risks are related to altitude sickness and weather conditions. Proper preparation and acclimatization are crucial.

Verified Our overall experience - described under Review tips We were two families consisting of six adults. The trip was very well organized with a lot of personal care. The hotel / camp tents we stayed in Manyara, Serengeti and Ngorangoro were in scenic locations and had good amenities. The driver cum guide of the van was very pleasant and very knowledgeable about the different birds and animals. We were therefore able to spot all the big five (rhino from a distance, but all others at close quarters). Needless to say we thoroughly enjoyed the trip. The cost was also reasonable and I would therefore highly recommend Shankar N2025-01-13Verified A great experience of Eastern african game parks, best value for money! Gonna Safaris provided a truly memorable experience on this tour of Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro. This was a four day tour, starting and ending in Arusha. We were a party of four, comprising of two families. We flew into Arusha on the first morning and were met at the airport by Ms Halimaa, from the tour operators. We left for Tarangire in short order in the Safari jeep, a Toyota landcruiser in top condition. Our driver, Mr Deryck, was excellent company besides being a first-class driver. The weather stayed good throughout. We covered Tarangire on day 1, Serengeti (via Ngorongoro) on Day2 and day 3, and Ngorongo on Day 4, to return to Arusha by the evening of day 4. We were again met by Ms Halimaa, who guided us to a nice restaurant for dinner, since we had the time, before dropping us in Kilimanjaro for our return flight. Thanks to the immaculate planing by the tour operators, we saw just about every animal we were told to expect/not to expect, in the three parks. And almost all of them at close quarters. The Landcruiser had onboard wifi, and the arrangements for stay were excellent on all three nights, with the people in the camping sites being extremely courteous and welcoming. About the only difficulty we had, being vegans, were with the food in a couple of places, but even those were minor and we were able to adjust. I would rate this as one of the best organised tours I have undertaken, and great value for money. aksuresh2025-01-12Verified Best Safari experience ever ! You will have an amazing experience.
